10 Things to do in Vail, Colorado This Fall

When most people think of Vail, Colorado, they think skiing. There's a lot of credence to this way of thinking since Vail was originally built in 1962 as a ski resort town.

But if you're planning on visiting Vail in the fall, you might worry you'll be bored. After all, the weather hasn't turned cold enough for much snow to start falling. Have no fear because there are plenty of things to do in Vail Colorado that anyone can enjoy.

Here are our ten favorite things to do in Vail Colorado this fall. We guarantee you'll have a blast here, even if the snow hasn't started falling yet.

1. Take a Hike

Since Vail and Beaver Creek don't open their doors for skiing until Friday, Nov. 17, 201, and Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2017, respectively, you'll have to find other ways to get your body moving.

Luckily, there are still plenty of ways to get exercise and enjoy the gorgeous views. One way you can do that is to go on one of the many hiking trails that surround the area.

Besides the amazing views the mountains provide, you'll also be able to see some stunning wildflowers and you might even see some wildlife. There are lakes to hike up to and you can even bring your dog and kids.

2. Wander Around at Betty Ford Alpine Gardens

While Betty Ford is known mostly for being the First Lady and being courageous enough to start her own detox clinic, she also has the nation's highest botanical garden's (and possibly the world) named after her.

There are four sections to the gardens, Mountain Perennial Garden (1989), Mountain Meditation Garden (1991) Alpine Rock Garden (1999), and the Children's Garden (2002). There are also over 3,000 species of plants growing here.

3. Catch a Show at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater

Betty isn't the only Ford listed on our things to do in Vail Colorado list, her husband Gerald has an amphitheater named after him. But there's a lot more to this amphitheater than just concerts. This is one space with lots of things to do in Vail Colorado.

The Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater boasts, "a commitment to leadership in athletic, artistic, educational and community-based endeavors through annual programs such as the Vail Dance Festival, Vilar Performing Arts Center, Hot Summer Nights and ShowDown Town Free Concert Series, GoPro Mountain Games, and World Cup Ski Racing."

4. Celebrate Halloween in Spooky Style

Halloween is fun for every age and there are plenty of Halloween things to do in Vail Colorado. You'll find fun Halloween activities all over Vail if you know where to look.

You'll find plenty of local bars throwing Halloween bashes complete with a costume contest and Maya in the Westin throws a fantastic Day of the Dead party.

If you're not into the bar scene or want something fun for the whole family to enjoy there are always haunted houses, a Fall Festival, and even a Scary Scurry Costume 5k run.

5. Visit the Eagle's Nest Wilderness Area

Eagle's Nest Wilderness area is 133,496 acres filled with plenty of things to do in Vail Colorado. There's bicycling, camping, picnicking, horseback riding, scenic driving, water activities, fishing, and more so there's plenty to see and do right in this area.

Before it became a national park, it was home to the Ute Native Americans who hunted here for elk and bison. While Eagle's Nest Wilderness will certainly leave a lasting impression on you, they ask you to leave no trace before you depart.

6. Pay Hommage to the Skiing Greats at the Colorado Ski and Snowboard Museum and Hall of Fame

The museum has been closed all summer for renovations and will be re-opened just in time for the 2017/2018 ski season to begin. So make sure you stop by to learn all about the history of skiing and snowboarding as well as the Spirit of Americans in the Winter Olympics.

There are also six themed galleries display artifacts, narratives and film documentaries that entertain and educate visitors of all ages so it's fun for the whole family.

7. Take Friends and Family River Rafting

If you're looking for things to do in Vail Colorado that has a lot of action involved, then you might want to book a day of river rafting. There is rafting for all ages starting from age two and up and for all levels of comfort.

You can float down a river, enjoy a little bit of excitement, or go all out with some whitewater, category IV river rafting. Lunch is included so go out and enjoy a day out on the water before it freezes over completely.

8. View the Public Works of Art

No need to go inside to see art while in Vail. Art in Public Places has made al fresco art accessible to everyone. There are playgrounds designed by artists and beautiful sculptures.

There is even a "riddle lane" located on Wall Street in Vail Village which features pictogram puzzles that are embedded into the brick pathway.

9. Have Epic Adventures at Epic Discovery

You can still enjoy fun on the mountain, even if you aren't skiing. With Epic Discovery you can enjoy adventure courses, zip lines, and a mountain coaster.

You can even start your fun adventure off with a scenic gondola ride up to Eagle's Nest. Best of all, kids can ride the gondola for free.

10. Enjoy a Spa Day

There is no shortage of spas in Vail Colorado. So go ahead and spend at least one day pampering yourself. After spending all your time outdoors roughing it, you'll probably need to get out a few kinks anyway.
